Foursquare was met with cynicism by a lot of social media and media commentators, but those that spotted its potential have been using it well.

Here are five things that we have discovered that you can do by checking in on Foursquare: 

1. Discover if you're near your friends - whether you're shopping in town or have just arrived for a meeting, a friend might check in nearby and ask you to lunch!
2. Find locals similar to you who go the places that you do and befriend them by adding them on Twitter.
3. See what tips are given about your regular hang outs.
4. Look out for offers and prizes that companies are running when you check in to their locations.
5. Have fun by checking in so much that you become a Mayor and unlock badges - trust us, you'll soon become addicted!
