Blog: Figures show 2010 was the year of sharing information
2010 was an exciting year for social media, according to recent statistics.
The acceleration in the use of social media has been phenomenal, for example the number of people on Twitter increased from 175 million people in September 2010 to 600 million people by the end of the year.
The figures showed how the Internet is used by many as a tool to share information; websites such as YouTube and Facebook make it easier than it ever has been for people to share videos. In 2010, 2 billion videos were viewed each day on YouTube, 35 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube every minute.
In addition to this, 30 billion pieces of content, including links, notes, photos etc. were shared on Facebook, the social networking site, each month in 2010.
And each month 20 million videos are uploaded to Facebook and over 2 billion videos are watched on the popular social networking site. Facebook had a staggering 250 million new users join the site in 2010.
Steve Holden, Managing Director of Prominent Media and Communications, said: "These statistics really show how integral social media is for sharing information - and the numbers are amazing!
"I am sure that 2011 will see social media follow this pattern and continue to become more and more influential every day."
